The kernel build patches that worked upto kernel 4.14.54, and are apparently obsolete from ver 4.14.56 on, don't apply to 4.14.55, but the kernel won't build without either.
On the other hand all mentionend kernel versions build with the released (read official) versions of make (4.2.1, 4.1) w/o any need for patching.
So I strongly opt to reinstall/rebuild make-4.2.1.

As discussed, make-4.2.1 will be reinstalled.
Just for the record (from the discussion), I prefer the solution
that you just downgrade it on the build host, as the old GNU Make
version has several issues.
But, I do not feel strongly about it, so do as you like.
Making a kernel 4.14.56 with the make from make-4.2.1-0, maked a booboo, aehm a segfault (I've heard this one before ...). Making the same with a make 4.2.1 build (maked?) with a different recipe yielded (as you might guess) to a working kernel.
So my resume is that make-4.2.1 wasn't properly build, and the next step would be towards make-4.2.1-2 using the (apparently working) patches from my favorite distro.
... stay tuned, we'll bring you more details as they emerge...
