For general advice on printer management on macOS see managing printers. If you wish to “just print”, go along that route.

The big Canon printers in the printer islands and the printer plant in the library have nonstandard options like printing onto transparencies, punching holes, stapling, making little booklets. If you wish to use one or more of these features, please follow the instructions here.

Install printer descriptions

  • Download the printer descriptions package from here.

  • The installer package is unsigned: Control-click on its icon, choose “Open”, then click “Open”.

  • Install the package.

Add a printer

  • From any application capable of printing, choose File -> Print… (keyboard shortcut ⌘P) to open the print dialog.

  • In the Printer: popup menu (top right), choose “Add Printer…”

  • Choose the printer you’d like to use from the list

The naming scheme is simple: It just contains the location of the printer in the building. If there is more than one in a single location, a lowercase letter is added to the name. Make sure to choose one of these which are of type “Bonjour”. (There might be other printers in the long list – please ignore them.)

  • Wait a few seconds, the three fields below the list should be filled in automatically.

  • Click Add. The printers have slightly different custom options like additional paper trays or a stapling unit, the one in the library is special anyway. Choose what is appropriate in the dialog sheet coming up. Configuration of our Canon printers in alphabetical order:

  • Click OK.
