Each installation of Mac OS X contains the Preview application, found in the Applications folder on the startup drive. Preview is a handy tool when viewing PDF documents, JPEG, PNG, and TIFF images. One thing I like about Preview: It’s fast. Compared to its competitors, Preview usually has a document open when the others are still starting up.

If you just want to combine some PDF documents into one and don’t want to use the command line or start Acrobat, here is a little trick how to do it with Preview on Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard:

  1. Make sure that “Open all images in one window” is selected in the Images tab of Preview’s Preferences window.

  2. Open the first PDF document, make sure the thumbnail sidebar is visible.

  3. From the Finder, drag the icons of the other PDF documents onto the sidebar.

  4. Rearrange the pages into the order you want to have by dragging the thumbnails.

  5. Choose “Save as…” and save the new PDF file.

For Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, Apple provides instructions in a separate support document.
